The Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) is a discreet and mysterious migratory bird, emblematic of the dense undergrowth of Europe and Asia. It stands out for its perfectly camouflaged plumage, a true marquetry of brown, fawn and grey, as well as for its long sensitive bill and its large dark eyes set very high on the head, giving it an exceptional 360-degree field of vision.

The vertical composition was chosen precisely to highlight the upward movement and energy of its take-off. The bird occupies the centre of the painting, its rounded wings pointed upwards in the abrupt beat so characteristic of the species. It is flight that reveals the woodcock in all its liveliness and breaks its invisibility: on the ground, it blends completely into the leaf litter; in the air, it unveils all the graphic complexity of its feathers. The background of warm ochre splashes and washes brings out the subtle tones of its woodland plumage without weighing down the composition.

The Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) is a migratory forest bird, widespread from northern Europe to Central Asia, wintering in temperate regions. It stands out for its extraordinarily precise cryptic plumage — an intricate mosaic of rufous, brown, and beige streaked with black that makes it virtually invisible in the underbrush. Its long, straight bill, sensitive at the tip, is an instrument for probing moist soil; its large dark eyes, set high and toward the back of the skull, give it an almost circular field of vision — the bird sees what is behind it while probing ahead.

The diagonal composition was chosen to capture the raw energy of the woodcock’s takeoff: the bird erupts from the bottom of the painting, wings spread in a vigorous upward beat, its head turned back as if stealing one last glance before flight. It is the takeoff that reveals the woodcock in all its graphic complexity: on the ground, it does not exist — it vanishes into the leaf litter; in the air, every feather is exposed. The background of warm ochre washes and splatters, crossed by a few blue-gray strokes, evokes the golden light of an autumn forest without weighing down the composition.

[2109,1190,1187

post-35627","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-european-wildlife","product_cat-giclees-on-paper","product_cat-limited-editions","pa_framing-framed-elm-burl","pa_framing-framed-light-oak","pa_framing-unframed","pa_support-limited-edition","pa_technic-drawing","pa_technic-watercolor-en","first","instock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-variable
