Description

ANIMAL DRAWING “Deer fight – CERVUS ELAPHUS

O

Sketch representing a red deer fight during the smoldering period. Sketch signed by Stéphane Alsac, animal artist.

The cry of the deer is called bellowing! It is a hoarse and very powerful cry, equivalent to more than 40 times the lowing of a cow. The bellowing sounds during September at the end of summer or beginning of autumn in the forests of France. Belling is the way for the deer to make known its desire to start a family; it is pushed during the rutting period! This is the time of year when deer seduce does to mate.

When the cries have not dissuaded the two deer, the fight takes place: we can hear the antlers clicking against each other. The fights are violent, the deer engage in a merciless physical struggle: one to defend his herd, the other to try to conquer a suitor. During combat, deer can suffer serious injuries to their antlers. Sometimes, the fight can take a completely different outcome, just as serious as the injury: the deer’s antlers can get tangled, and the deer can get stuck. When trying to free themselves, deer can lose their strength, and therefore become exhausted in combat and sometimes die.
