"Wolves Fight"

Graphite pencil drawing of two wolves fighting, one biting the muzzle of the other who growls with bared teeth, by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is a social predator whose hierarchy rests on permanent dominance interactions. Confrontations between individuals, even within the same pack, are ritualised but can be violent: they establish or contest the balance of power. These face-offs are brief, intense, and legible in every detail of the body — flattened ears, bared lips, fixed stare.

The choice to frame tightly on the two heads, to the point of overlapping them, erases all context and concentrates attention on the tension between the two animals. The gaze of the right-hand wolf, fixed directly into the viewer's eyes, establishes a third power relationship — that with the one who watches. The entanglement of forms and the sketch deliberately left visible at the periphery accentuate the sense of an instant seized in the heat of the action.
