"Zebra Kid"

Watercolor

Baby zebra drawing and illustration by wildlife illustrator Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The zebra (Equus quagga) develops a vital adaptation from birth: standing and walking within minutes of coming into the world. Faced with the predators of the savannah, the fragility of those first moments cannot linger. Its limbs, still disproportionate and trembling, seek balance with instinctive urgency; the stripes, soft and brown-tinged in the foal, do not yet have the sharp contrast of the adult, but the will to follow the herd is already complete.

The little zebra is captured in the hesitant moment of its very first steps, moving forward towards the viewer. The absence of background fully detaches its frail silhouette and draws the eye to the tension of its effort: its long legs spread apart to find support, its head raised with a curiosity tinged with worry. The watercolour uses the lightness of washes to suggest the softness of the young coat melting into the white of the paper, while more defined lines set the pattern of the stripes and the black of the muzzle. It is this contrast between the vulnerability of the posture and the pure strength of instinct that makes the subject: life asserting itself and setting off from nothing.
