Biography

Stéphane Alsac —
contemporary French wildlife artist

Stéphane Alsac, born in 1976 in Nantes, is a contemporary French wildlife artist: a painter, draughtsman and photographer specialising in the wildlife of Africa and Europe. Self-taught, he developed a hyperrealist oil painting that the specialist press has called “impressionist hyperrealism”. A hyperrealist wildlife painter based near Bordeaux, France, he has been a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists (USA) since 2017. He received the Wildlife Artist of the Year Award from Safari Club International (USA, 2024), the Medal of Excellence from Artists for Conservation (Canada, 2016) and the Baron Prize at the Salon National des Artistes Animaliers (France, 2019).

“I see myself as a portraitist of animals.”

— Stéphane Alsac, CHARC Magazine, 2026

Renowned for the anatomical precision and intense dramatic force of his work, he regularly paints on a large scale, seeking to create a physical, immersive face-to-face between the viewer and the animal that reveals both the sovereignty and the vulnerability of the wild. Each canvas is the portrait of an individual, not the depiction of a species.

Spending several months a year in the wild places of Europe and Africa — Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, South Africa — making field studies, sketches and photographs, Stéphane has developed an intimate knowledge of wildlife. Back in the calm of his studio, he composes his paintings from this documentation, then paints them in oil on linen canvas, over several months for the large formats. Far from seeking technical prowess alone or a cold realism, his approach aims to capture the truth of a gaze or the tension of a suspended moment.
