"Dust Rage"
Oil on canvas
'Dust Rage' is a contraction. Dust — the cloud of dust that a charging rhinoceros raises like a war cloud. And Rage — my anger at poaching, that industrial slaughter that massacres rhinoceroses for their horn, a simple mass of keratin sold at exorbitant prices with no scientific justification whatsoever. This title is as much a state of mind as a painting title.
But this painting is above all a defiant gesture against those who would reduce this animal to a trophy or a commodity. This rhinoceros is alive, sovereign, magnificent. It is in the foreground, it occupies all the space, it charges. That charge is not a threat — it is an answer. An answer of irrefutable beauty to the ugliness of those who hunt it.
I chose the face-to-face with no stepping back. The rhinoceros overflows the frame — it takes up space, it invades. The dust envelops the scene in an atmosphere of total movement, almost audible. The brutal foreground, the mass of the body, the gaze — everything gives that feeling of absolute presence, impossible to avoid.
The light is dry, direct, African. It cuts the volumes of the skin with precision — every fold, every crack of the hide. But hyperrealism is not an end in itself: it serves emotion. To render this rhinoceros so concrete and tangible is to refuse to let it become abstract — to reduce it to a number in a poaching report.
