"In the Mist"
Oil on canvas
In the mist, there is always that moment before. Before the bear sees you, before it makes up its mind, before it disappears. I wanted to paint that silence — a British Columbia grizzly moving through the cold morning water, the world still suspended between night and day.
The North American grizzly is one of the most impressive creatures on the continent. In British Columbia, it lives in river valleys and coastal forests — where the salmon run, where water and forest meet. It moves with a deceptive slowness, that particular rolling of the shoulder that speaks at once of power and ease. In the early morning, when mist still covers the banks, it is often the only living creature visible in the landscape. The world belongs to it.
For this painting, I chose a background completely dissolved — no forest, no mountain, no context. Nothing but the mist, the water, and the animal. The horizontal composition widens the space, giving the bear the room it actually occupies. I framed low, at water level, so the viewer is at the animal's level — not above it, with it. The raised paw fixes the instant: a step, an intention, a presence.
The muted palette — whites, warm greys, deep browns — says something that cannot quite be named. The grizzly does not threaten. It crosses. And it carries with it something of the world before.
