"Kimya"
Oil on canvas · 55 × 46 cm (21.7 × 18.1 in) · 2025
Kimya means 'peace' in Swahili. It is the word that comes to mind when I look at this leopard. Not the stillness of an absence of danger — the peace of the sovereign predator, who has nothing to prove, nothing to demonstrate. He is simply there, and that is enough.
I built the entire composition around the gaze. Nothing else was permitted to take precedence — the coat, the background, everything is arranged to draw the eye back to those eyes. Steady, direct, without aggression. A gaze that neither flees nor attacks.
The background tones are deliberately soft, almost neutral. I wanted nothing to compete with the precision of the coat and the depth of that gaze. The light is gentle, even — it envelops without dramatising. That is a rare choice for me, accustomed as I am to strong contrasts.
Kimya is an invitation to slow down. To look without fear. To understand that serenity can exist in the eyes of a predator.
