"The Small One"
Oil on canvas
The elephant calf is looking at me — and I felt looked at in return. This direct face-to-face, this still-clumsy trunk, these dark eyes that already seem to hold all the wisdom of the world... I spent hours on this skin, rendering every fold, every asperity, that texture so particular to elephants — the most human of wild animals.
The composition is deliberately tight, immersive. You enter this painting. The grey, benevolent mass of the mother in the background creates a cocoon, a bubble of protection that extends beyond the frame. This is not simply an animal portrait — it is a declaration about that absolute bond between a mother and her young, between fragility and the strength that sleeps within.
I worked the contrast between the soft light that reveals the details of the foreground and the deep darkness that envelops it. That light says something: the importance of what is small, of what is beginning, of what carries within it the immensity of what it will become.
'The Small One' — the little one. This painting leaves no one indifferent. It imposes a presence, a silence. Hung on a wall, it continues to watch — and responds, from a distance, to 'The Big One': the same animal, years later, in the full radiance of its power.
