"The Call"

The bugling of the wapiti is one of the most singular sounds in the wild: high-pitched, metallic, almost unreal. Its long vocal cords produce this call that resounds for kilometres through the forests of North America, signalling its power to all females and rivals alike.
I wanted to capture the precise instant of that call — the neck extended, the head raised, the breath visible in the cold morning air. Not the animal at rest, not the animal in flight: the animal in the full authority of the moment it asserts its presence to the world.
This painting is called 'L'Appel'. Not only because the wapiti is calling — but because this image, too, calls something in us.
