This painting is an encounter. A fox that stops, that looks. Not towards the landscape, not towards a prey — towards us. There is something indefinable in that gaze: wariness, perhaps, but also a quiet curiosity, almost conspiratorial.
I wanted to paint that suspended instant when the animal and the person size each other up in silence. The russet coat worked hair by hair, the golden light that envelops it — but what matters is what this image leaves with the viewer. Something that cannot quite be named. A secret.
