"N'Weti"

N'weti means Moon in the Tsonga language. I searched for a long time for why this name had imposed itself on this particular leopard. The answer lies in the gaze — in the two eyes that do not carry the same light. One is amber, golden, solar. The other is azure blue, cold, lunar. It is this duality that the work carries: two antagonistic lights in a single gaze, moon and sun united in one great cat.
The leopard is stretched along a gnarled branch, its body on the diagonal, its head turned towards us — not quite face on, but just enough to establish contact.
In the background, a network of fine, twisted branches weaves a graphic web in the warm light of the setting sun — a structure that holds the eye before returning it to that gaze. Those two eyes that are not alike. That moon and that sun in a single great cat.
