Statement of Intent

"Fiercely Protective" captures a rare moment in the heart of the Masai Mara: for the very first time, a lioness leads her cubs out of their hiding place. In the first rays of morning light, on the still-fresh dew, the family savours a fragile calm.

The calm does not last. A male lion has come too close, an intruder ready to kill the cubs to claim the mother. The lioness stands her ground. In a split second, everything shifts from the gentleness of morning to a struggle for survival.

That tension is what I wanted to paint. The panoramic format lets the savanna breathe, yet the eye always returns to the mother, a living shield around which her cubs huddle. The ochres and golds of dawn wrap the scene, and only her bared fangs break that harmony.

"Fiercely Protective" pays tribute to maternal instinct, a force that overrides all caution. There is nothing more formidable than a mother protecting her young, whatever her species. The lion is about to learn that the hard way.
