"Kijani"
Oil on canvas
When I paint an animal, it is essential to me that it appears alive. To achieve this, several things must be respected: first, the anatomy of the subject must be correct — the slightest error will disturb the 'reading' of the painting and the viewer will be unable to be drawn into it. Then the animal's gaze must convey something — an emotion, a question, or something else. Finally, attitude is paramount and allows one to play with the composition.
Here, my wish was to paint a portrait of a beautiful leopard with incredible eyes in a calm, relaxed attitude. The choice of background borders on the abstract. We are outside time, as when one observes a fragment of this animal's life. All that remains is a memory, an emotion.
Kijani means 'Warrior' in Swahili.
