"Equinox"
Oil on canvas
The equinox is that fleeting moment when night and day are of equal length. The choice of the zebra imposed itself as the natural way to illustrate this duality. Its stripes are not mere patterns; they are a graphic score in which black and white confront and complete one another. In "Equinox", this interplay of lines creates a visual dynamic.
The canvas's balance is also played out in a confrontation of chromatic temperatures. On one side, the zebra's coat and the background are bathed in cool tones — blue-tinted whites and muted greys that evoke the coolness of shadow. On the other, a solar energy pierces this atmosphere through the mane.
The composition of this portrait rests on an immersive framing. By choosing to reveal only part of the animal's "face", I move beyond simple naturalistic representation and enter another dimension: the frontal gaze is the central pivot — an invitation to introspection, creating a direct and almost mystical bond between the observer and the wild. The animal's eye seems to scrutinise us as much as we observe it.
