"Fight Club"
Oil on canvas
During the rut, male wild boar engage in fierce battles punctuated by bestial cries. They hone their tusks on sandstone by 'champing' — which sharpens them like knives and produces an impressive foam of saliva. This is no game. This is a duel.
I chose to paint this scene in snow — that white background which cuts sharply against the brutality of the combat, isolating the two adversaries and revealing them in all their power. The vapour of their breath, the bristling fur, the interlocked tusks: everything here is tension and impact.
The first rule of Fight Club: you do not talk about it. I made a painting of it.
