"Zebras Crossing"

The Great Migration is one of the most breathtaking spectacles in the animal world. Hundreds of thousands of zebras and wildebeest in motion, driven by instinct and the need to find fresh grass on the other side of the Mara River. The crossing — the moment the herd plunges into the water — is the tipping point of the entire migration.

A single zebra is enough to trigger the movement. A moment of collective hesitation, then the mass surges forward. The crocodiles wait, motionless below the surface. Within minutes, thousands of animals cross at the same point in a chaos of hooves, water, and dust. I witnessed this moment. You do not forget it.

The composition is deliberately destabilising — like a badly framed photograph taken in the melee. The zebras climb the opposite bank, seen from behind: a rare perspective, almost abstract, in which the black-and-white stripes interweave in motion. No central figure, no hierarchy — just the mass in movement, the bank rising, and the energy of a headlong rush.

My intention was to freeze a moment of pure chaos. Not the crossing in its entirety, but this fragment — noisy, imperfect, overflowing the frame. Something that gives the viewer the impression of having been there, in the wrong place, at the right moment.
