"The Last Stand"
Oil on canvas
'The buffalo looks at you as if you owe him money' — this celebrated quote from Robert Ruark captures rather well the impression left by an encounter with an old Caffer Caffer male.
The Caffer Caffer buffalo is the largest buffalo in Africa, capable of exceeding 900 kg. What makes its legend is its natural aggressiveness — even females will not hesitate to charge lions in defence of their young.
Each individual is different, and after spending so much time with the herds, I sometimes recognise certain ones. I am particularly fond of the old males with their worn, time-polished horns. Their 'faces' become weathered and reveal their hardened character.
'The Last Stand' is this old male standing proudly and fearlessly against the predator.
