"My Wolf"

When my client asked me to work on a Canadian wolf, he gave me free rein. What immediately came to mind was that childhood fear of the Big Bad Wolf. Not the Brothers Grimm version, but the one in Jack London's writing; the one in Prokofiev's musical tale.
Through this painting, I wanted to recapture the fantastic image of the enormous black wolf whose eyes gleam in the night — the wolf as black as night, unafraid of man, carrying within it all the phantasmagoric imagery we attribute to the wolf.
The composition of the painting is simple, based on the animal's simultaneously aggressive and defensive posture. The elk's carcass and antlers accentuate the composition and frame the wolf's gaze. The colour palette is reduced, reinforcing the wintry atmosphere of the forest and allowing those golden eyes to shine.
We have surprised the wolf mid-meal; we have now become its enemy, its competitor.
