"Sunset Guardian"
Oil on canvas
Nine months without painting. Nine months setting aside the brushes, the canvases, the smell of oils. This was not a pause chosen from fatigue, but a necessity — time to understand why I paint, and where I want to go. Sunset Guardian was born of that silence. The first painting after the long parenthesis.
I wanted this lion to embody exactly what I had found during those nine months: a settled presence, without agitation. It does not look — it simply is. Seated in the evening light, it has nothing to prove. That sovereign serenity is what I was seeking to find again in myself.
The raking light of the setting sun sculpts the coat in warm touches — golds, burnt oranges, long shadows. The background dissolves into a golden haze that isolates the figure and concentrates all attention on the face. The handling is freer than my previous works, more liberated in the detail, without sacrificing the overall realism.
This painting marks a turning point in my work. After the pause, I was no longer trying to prove technique — I wanted every brushstroke to carry something true. Sunset Guardian is the first work in which I felt I had painted exactly what I felt, and not simply what I saw.
