"Wolf"

Naturalist graphite pencil drawing of a standing wolf on white background, wildlife illustration by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is the largest wild canid in Europe. Having disappeared from France for nearly a century, it has been naturally recolonising the Alpine massifs since the 1990s. A social animal living in packs with complex hierarchy, it is one of the most studied and most controversial predators on the continent.

The wolf stands in the grass, body in profile, but it has turned its head to look at us. It is that gaze that holds — the pale eyes, slightly wary, of an animal that has every reason to be. The drawing seeks neither to make it menacing nor familiar: just present, in the full reality of its thick fur and solid body.
