"Tarpon"

Graphite pencil drawing of a tarpon head with large scales and characteristic jaw by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) is one of the great game fish, renowned for its spectacular leaps when hooked. Its large silver scales and wide-cut mouth make it an immediately recognisable species, present from the Atlantic coasts to the tropical lagoons.

The framing is radical: head down, mouth open, as if the fish were surging towards the viewer in the middle of a jump. The angle comes from below, which gives the jaw its full amplitude. The body disappears in a loose line — nothing else matters but this suspended moment, just before the tarpon falls back into the water.
