"Running Hare"

Watercolour of a hare in full bounding stride, mixed technique watercolour and graphite on beige background, by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The European hare (Lepus europaeus) is one of the fastest mammals of the French countryside, capable of reaching 70 km/h on open ground. Its full-speed gait is characteristic: the long hind legs overtake the forelegs on the ground, propelling the body in a succession of low-bounding leaps. The eye, positioned on the side of the head, allows near-panoramic vision even in full flight.

The horizontal composition was chosen to accompany the movement and give it space ahead. The hare is caught in maximum extension, the body almost horizontal, one foreleg stretched far forward. The eye, visible despite the speed, betrays the animal's vigilance: even in flight, it watches. The wash backgrounds — grey-blue and ochre — evoke the open space of the plain without depicting it.
