"leopard cub"
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is perfectly adapted to arboreal life. Young ones learn to climb from their first weeks and spend a great deal of their time in trees, sheltered from other predators.
It is not colour that lies at the heart of this drawing — it is light. The cub on its branch is half in shadow: the lit half reveals the rosettes and the fixed eye, the right half disappears into dark. The pencil works alone, without colour, and it is in that black and white that the animal's nocturnal nature is revealed.
