"Serval Kid"

Watercolour painting of a seated serval kitten with golden spotted fur by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The serval (Leptailurus serval) is an African feline of the savannahs and wetlands, recognisable above all others by its disproportionately large ears, long slender legs, and spotted coat. It is one of the most efficient hunters among the cats, capable of leaping more than two metres to catch a bird in flight. As a kitten, it already carries all the distinguishing marks of the species, in miniature.

The kitten is shown seated, slightly at three-quarters, in the calm and attentive posture of the young feline monitoring its surroundings. The ears — already large in proportion to the skull — are erect and angled forward. It is this imbalance between the still tiny body and the already adult precision of the gaze that makes the subject: the animal does not yet have the stature, but it already has the eye.
