"Wolf Kid 2"

Framed baby forest animals décor with a wolf cub — illustration by Stéphane Alsac
Statement of Intent

The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is a social canid living in packs with a strict hierarchy. Pups are born blind and deaf, and spend their first weeks in the den. The howl — that song which defines the species — is first practised clumsily by the young, who begin to reproduce it from a few weeks old, responding to adults or simply in imitation.

The pup is shown seated on a rock, its head thrown back towards the sky, its mouth slightly open — in the exact beginning of a howl. That precise moment was chosen because it concentrates everything the wolf will become: the verticality of the posture, the call towards the sky, the instinct already present in a body still clumsy. The warm ochre wash background forms a halo around the head, isolating the silhouette without depicting a landscape.
