"Snowpiercer"
Oil on canvas
The American bison is a living fortress. When it moves through snow, it is not the bison that yields — it is the storm.
'Snowpiercer' — the title came to me as an obvious choice, like that film which left its mark on me: a train that never stops, that drives through ice and cold because stopping would mean death. This bison does not flee winter, it charges straight through it. It does not go around. It pierces.
I wanted to make tangible that tension between the softness of the falling snow and the dark, relentless mass of an animal that has no reverse gear. Warm breath against snowflakes, hooves hammering the frozen ground — the tight, almost monumental framing was a necessity. You cannot see the horizon, you do not know where it is heading — you are simply face to face with it, in the storm, and that is enough.
